6th Grade DLI Welcome
Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to 6th grade! We are so excited to start this school year with you. This is going to be a year full of learning, growth, and new opportunities as we prepare for the transition to middle school. We’re thrilled to be working together to support your child both academically and personally.
As you know, being in the Portuguese Immersion program, your child has a unique opportunity to continue developing their Portuguese language skills. In Professora Machado’s classroom, students are expected to communicate in Portuguese at all times, unless there is an urgent need and the student is unable to express themselves in Portuguese. Please help us support the “Portuguese Only” expectation in that classroom by encouraging your child to speak Portuguese whenever possible and by speaking English only in the hallway or in Mrs. Shumway’s class.
Here are a few important reminders:
- Water Bottles: Please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school every day. Learning can be thirsty work!
- Fragrance Alert: Mrs. Shumway is allergic to perfumes and scented products. To help keep her safe and healthy, please make sure your child does not wear perfume, cologne, or fun-smelling lotion to school. Mrs. Shumway has “friendly” lotion and hand sanitizer available in the classroom. Parents, if possible, please avoid entering her classroom if you’re wearing scented products. She is happy to put on a mask and meet you in the hallway if needed.
- Getting Ready for 6th Grade Success: A great way to start the year strong is by continuing to read daily and reviewing math facts—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Our class website includes links to fun math games. To keep Portuguese skills sharp, we also recommend speaking with classmates or siblings in Portuguese, using Elefante, or practicing with Duolingo.
We are truly looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. It's going to be an AMAZING year! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Professora Machado & Mrs. Shumway
