Welcome Back to School 2025
We value communication.
Please
update your Powerschool account as soon as possible.
Our school webpage is a great resource as well. We encourage you to share your comments through the website using the “Contact Us” icon.
Teachers will also have their own apps for communication.

We love seeing your children!
Children can enter classrooms as early as 8:35 through the front entrance only.
There will be adult supervision and crossing guards starting at 8:45.
Breakfast starts at 8:35.
Pickup and drop-off times are congested.  Please follow the rules.
Students are to be seated in their class and ready to learn at 9:05 AM.
Excuse ALL absences through the SafeArrival app.
After the children enter their classes and turn in homework, they may play outside. Recess supervision staff will let them in the building at 9:00.

We take safety very seriously while your children are with us.
All doors are locked everyday. All students and adults will enter through the front doors.
All students must follow all school-wide expectations everyday.
Adults will not be allowed to walk their children to the rooms in the mornings.
**2 Day Exception: Parents of Kindergarten and First Grade children may walk their children to the classroom on the first two days of school.  There will always be adults to welcome and help them for the rest of the year.

Cellular devices are very distracting during the school day.
With full staff support, Sunrise is requiring ALL students to turn off cellular devices for the entire school day. Phones and watches will be placed in backpacks when they get to school.  Watches can be worn again at the last bell.  Exceptions may apply for IEP, 504, or medical accommodations.

Warm Regards,
Caron Heaps, School Secretary     caron.heaps@ccsdut.org

Welcome Back Letter
2025-2026

Dear Sunrise Families,

I want to officially welcome all of you to the 2025-26 School Year!  For those of you who are new to our school, please know that you are coming to an absolutely wonderful place. Our teachers and staff are passionate, caring, hardworking, and always learning something new for the benefit of your children. We are a collaborative and driven group of people who take learning seriously while also making personal connections that help kids succeed. Sunrise parents are aware of the valuable information on this website.  Understanding how busy the school secretary is, they are happy to check the website before calling the school with questions.  Sunrise Website Link

This is my fourth year as the principal at Sunrise. Before leading Sunrise, I was the principal at White Pine Elementary for seven years. I taught for 20 years prior to becoming an administrator.  This year, I am excited to introduce our School Support Leader, Mike Summers. In addition to training and supporting our support staff, he will fill in for me when I have meetings or am out in classrooms supporting students and teachers.  Mike and I are thrilled at the opportunity to engage in the educational process with you.  We believe that building strong connections between home and school is a key factor in increasing student achievement.  Caron Heaps, our school secretary, is able to help you with almost anything.  If she cannot help you and Mrs. Healy or Mr. Summers are not readily available, Caron will be happy to give us your message or make an appointment to meet with one of us.

New Staff This Year:

Mike Summers, School Support Leader    Mike is not new to Sunrise: only his job title changed.  He brings many years of experience in special education in middle school and elementary school. He previously served as our resource teacher and created a supportive and challenging environment for students with mild learning disabilities.  He has his leadership credentials so he will fill in for Mrs. Healy when she is not available.

Keiko Mitchell, Resource Teacher   Keiko is a graduate of Sky View High School, University of Utah, and Utah State University. She is excited to be our resource teacher and has experience from North Park Elementary and Salt Lake City School District.

Amanda Gates, Essential Elements Teacher   Amanda has taught special education in an essential elements setting for 15 years and can't wait to start year 16 with all of us at Sunrise.

Liege Furman, Portuguese 5th Grade Teacher   Liege and her husband are excited to move to Smithfield from Brazil.  She has a background in teaching languages and is excited to learn more about Dual Language Immersion. She will be working with Mr. Haramoto who has moved to 5th grade this year.

Back to School Night

You will have a chance to meet all of our teachers at our Back to School Night on Monday August 18th to meet the teachers. Teachers will repeat their presentations three times: one at 6:00, at 6:30, and again at 7:00 to accommodate families with multiple children.  Our school health aide will be available to collect health information for children with medical needs.  Caron, our school secretary, will be available as will our lunch secretary, Lisa Jarrett.  PTA will provide information about how you donate your time and talents to the many fun activities throughout the year. Class placements will be available through Powerschool on Monday August 11th.  Please update your Powerschool information using this link: Powerschool Parent Portal

School Safety:

All people entering our school will need to be ready to show their ID at the entrance upon ringing the buzzer and then either sign in to volunteer or enter the office.  Every adult will wear ID whether they are a school employee or parent volunteer.  Parents and other adults are not allowed to enter any other doors.  No one will be allowed to check out a child unless you have designated them as a trusted person in Powerschool.  Parents are not allowed to escort their children to the classrooms with the exception of the children who are new to the school. Morning crossing guards will be stationed at 8:45.  Parents are responsible for making sure their children get to school safely before this time.

Cell Phones and Cellular Watches:

All cellular devices must be turned off during the school day.  Cellular watches have been proven to be a big distraction during instruction. Teachers may ask students to take cellular watches off at the start of the day and put them back on at the end of the day.  District Policy for Elementary Schools

School Hours:     9:05-3:35 Monday through Thursday    9:05- 2:20 Fridays

In the interest of safety, please do not drop off your children before 8:30 AM, as there is no supervision before that time. Student will be required to stay in the foyer by the office until 8:45. There will be no supervision at crosswalks until 8:45 AM. Also, please be sure to pick up your children by 3:45 in the afternoon on Mondays - Thursdays.  Fridays are early out days so students must be picked up by 2:30.

Arrival Times:

School starts at 9:05 everyday.  However, we encourage you to get your children there by 8:45 to get their work turned in and materials ready for a positive start to their day.  Students who are consistently tardy are at a clear disadvantage and usually arrive feeling frantic and unprepared. All students who arrive after 9:05 must fill out a late slip and give it to the secretary.   If your child will not be at school, you must call to excuse them.

Meal Prices and Menus:

This year, school lunch will cost $2.05. Breakfast, which is served from 8:35-9:00, will cost $1.40.  Lunch menus can also be accessed on our school website by clicking on the fork and knife icon.  Students are not allowed to share food and are given 15-20 minutes to eat.  In order to stagger the number of children on the playground at one time, students will be required to wait to be excused by a staff member. Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their children anytime during the year.  Adult meals cost $4.00  To determine if your child is eligible for free or reduced meal prices by clicking on this link:  https://sunrise.ccsdut.org/parents123/school-meals

Optional School Supplies

Everything your child will need at school is provided for them.  However, many teachers will ask for donations at Back to School Night.  Thank you for your support.

Drop off and Pick up:

For drop off/pick up information, please refer to the following map: link to map  Please be mindful of your opportunity to be a role model for children by always crossing in the crosswalks and following the directions of all the staff who are ensuring the safety of the children.
